As a Peer Coordinator for NSMHA you will work with the ACCS program, providing support and guidance to ACCS teams in order to ensure that the role of Peer Support Specialist is defined and integrated into services. The Peer Coordinator provides Peer supervision and mentorship to Peer Support Specialists in ACCS. This position reports to the ACCS Director and “ACCS Peer Leadership” and is designated for a person who is or has been a recipient of services for a mental health and/or substance use disorder and identifies as a person in Recovery. Because of his/her life experience with mental illness and mental health services, the Peer Coordinator provides expertise that professional training cannot replicate. The Peer Coordinator may also be a resource to other Departments of the Agency with the goal of helping the entire Agency become more Recovery focused.
Expectation of the Role:
- Provides Peer supervision and mentorship to Peer Support Specialists in ACCS and represent the agency in various committees, events and recovery focused trainings.
- Delivers guidance and supervision to Peer Support Specialists within the ACCS program with regard to their role as peer support specialists as directed.
- Acts as a mentor to other Peer Support Specialists in ACCS and as an educator to other integrated team members who seek to learn the role of a peer support specialist.
- Participates and makes recommendations in the recruitment, hiring, and evaluation of Peer Support Specialists in ACCS.
- Meets regularly with ACCS Program Directors and Assistant Program Managers to develop schedules, provide guidance, and assist in the assignments of Peer Support Specialists within designated teams to assure peer support services that uphold the values and ethics of each discipline.
- Effectively advocates for people with mental health and/or substance use disorders and plays a leadership role in helping others understand the need for people to independently make informed choices regarding their own recovery.
- Provides leadership in the implementation and use of WRAP or similar recovery oriented self-management plans as well as other Evidenced Based Practices including Stages of Change and Motivational Interviewing.
- All other duties as assigned by Peer Leadership and the ACCS Director.
What you’’ll need:
Education: High School Diploma/GED required. Bachelor’s Degree preferred (which may be in a field other than behavioral sciences).
Experience: Has work experience with adults who identify as having a mental health and/or substance use disorder or with individuals with similar human-services needs. Has three years of supervisory experience, preferably in the human services field. Must be a current or former recipient of mental health services who is in recovery. Peer or recovery coach certification required. May have related training (e.g., certified occupational therapy assistant, home health care aide) or work experience (e.g., teaching) and life experience.
Skills: CPR/First Aid certified within three months of hire (training provided)
