North Suffolk Mental Health Association is one of New England’s most respected and progressive mental health services organizations.  The CMO/Medical Director under the general oversight of the Chief Executive Officer and direct report and collaboration with the Chief Operating Officer is responsible for overall management of all medical matters for the Agency, providing leadership with respect to strategic planning, compliance and operations. This positions works closely with North Suffolk Executive Team Leadership, the Department of Mental Health, and the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Psychiatry.

The CMO/Medical Director provides leadership to the Division of Ambulatory Services and Medical/Psychiatric team clinical improvement efforts to ensure the widespread deployment of evidence-based practice for safe, effective, equitable, patient-centered and efficient care. Direct reports include physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, and associate Medical Directors, Director of Nursing and other medical team managers within the medical/psychiatric team. The position will also have clinical responsibility with the split being 80% administrative and 20% clinical.

NSMHA is an active training site for the Massachusetts General Hospital – McLean Hospital Psychiatric Residency Training Program, with possible appointment with the MGH Department of Psychiatry.

Desired applicants possess competence, credentials, and experience to make independent judgments about cases and systems and are able to develop systems, practices, and policies regarding healthcare needs. Some on-call consultation after hours required.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides management and oversight for overall administrative/clinical aspects of agency medical matters. Develops and reviews medical and psychiatric policies, procedures and regulations for all agency services in accordance with applicable local and federal regulations and laws.
  • Serves as the Medical director of Ambulatory Services and medical team of over 20 psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, and nurses. Collaborates very closely with the Director of Ambulatory Services and Addiction Program to provide overall vision, strategy, and direction for the division.
  • Provides physician/clinician leadership to the Division of Ambulatory Services leadership team and clinical programs. Responsible for the productivity, utilization, quality management, and billing compliance of the Medical/Psychiatry team.
  • Develops innovative solutions, key working relationships, continuity of vision, coordination, and operational linkages so that the Medical/Psychiatric Team collaborates effectively with other divisions to achieve benchmark clinical, operational, financial, and physician engagement results.
  • Member of the executive team routinely interfacing with the board of directors; actively participates in agency and specific division strategic planning.
  • Leads and/or collaborates on federal and state grant application; collaborates and provides monitoring and consultation to existing federal grant programs. Lead/contributes to clinical program vision, planning and implementation in collaboration with executive team and senior managers. Co-leads and supports health technology deployment and implementation in clinical care settings.
  • Ensures that organizational initiatives are implemented in a timely way throughout the ambulatory division and that the division leadership team integrates improvement goals and programs into operations.
  • Maintains a clinical practice in the designated service line area. Demonstrated financial responsibility to include managing within a budget and will aid the dyad/triad -service line partner in the development of capital and operational budgets.
  • Provides medical and psychiatric consultation and expertise to various programs including Adult Community Clinical Services (ACCS), Residential Program, and Behavioral Health Community Program (BHCP). Represents the agency and collaborates closely with the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (DMH).
  • Serves as Chair of the Medical Practices Committee and the Agency Risk Management Committee; attends to DMH Continuing Care Risk Review meetings and other clinical, administrative interagency meetings.
  • Partners with and serves as liaison to the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Psychiatry and other academic programs with the goal of supporting and growing the clinical workforce of the future.
  • Medical liaison to affiliated entities including governmental, regulatory, and payer entities.




  • Minimum Education: M.D.; D.O.; Completed Residency Training in Psychiatry
  • Training in Addiction Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist or Public and Community Psychiatry is highly desirable
  • Minimum Experience: At least five (5) years of recent experience as a practicing psychiatrist; At least five (3) years of experience as a physician leader in a multi-site or outpatient community settings
  • Experience in community and public sector mental health required; direct clinical experience with severe mental illness and substance use disorders preferred.
  • Experience working in a dyad or triad leadership model preferred. Experience in post-graduate training and research preferred.


  • Full license to practice medicine or osteopathy in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine.
  • Board certification from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in good standing.
  • Buprenorphine waiver required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • At least one shot of the COVID-19 vaccination is required prior to hire and complete the full vaccination schedule in the appropriate timeline as documented by the CDC requirements for vaccination.
