NSMHA is looking for a Services over Sentences (SOS) Recovery Coach to join the team! The SOS Recovery Coach is a person who is grounded in peer-assisted recovery. Because of his/her life experience with substance use and/ or other addictions, the recovery coach provides expertise that clinical training cannot replicate.  Recovery coaches report to Director of Recovery Support Services and are fully integrated team members who provide psycho-educational groups and recovery coaching for Suffolk County District Attorney’s Services over Sentences (SOS) initiative. Recovery Coaches also provide essential expertise and consultation to the District Attorney’s office and trial court staff to promote a culture in which recoverees’ points of view and preferences are recognized, understood, respected and integrated into support, treatment, rehabilitation, and community-based recovery-oriented systems of care.

Three positions are available.

What You’ll Do:

  • Supervise and/or coach recoverees, based on their needs in recovery-oriented skills, activities of daily living, socialization, and community integration.
  • Assist the Suffolk County DA’s Office with interventions to engage high risk high need individuals presenting in court with substance use disorder.
  • Assist the treatment team to develop an individual action plan or support the recoveree in developing a wellness plan.
  • Implement, teach, assist and/ or coach persons served with their individual action plan or recoverees who have developed their own wellness plan to review their goals and objectives on a consistent basis.
  • Interface with all collateral contacts working with the persons served or recoverees coached. (I.e. Probation Officers, individual therapists, and treatment providers).
  • When appropriate, assist persons served in identifying and accessing resources in the community and assist with removing barriers
  • Develop and enhance peer driven educational services.
  • Participate in daily staff organizational meetings and treatment planning or wellness planning review meetings.
  • Work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of persons served and program.
  • When appropriate document progress to maintain a permanent record of recoveree activity according to established methods and procedures.
  • Participate in the provision of services to persons served by co-facilitating groups (in conjunction with professional staff) to provide support for increased stability in their lives through recovery and a better understanding of their symptoms of relapse as well as symptoms of mental illness.
  • Provide ongoing assessment, problem solving, side-by-side services, skill training, supervision (e.g. prompts, assignments, monitoring, encouragement), and environmental adaptations to assist persons served with activities of daily living (i.e. identifying and attending self-help meetings, support with sponsorship).
  • Provide recovery coaching when recoverees have indicated that preference and responded well to that approach.

What You’ll Need:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a field other than behavioral sciences or have a high school degree, or GED. A certificate from the Recovery Coach Academy required, CARC preferred.
  • Experience: Previous work experience with adults diagnosed with substance abuse and or dependency. Should have experience and knowledge regarding the addiction treatment service system, recovery coaching and other related human services.

The BCBA Supervisor position serves as the educational supervisor for the Clinical Manager and Clinical Assistant within the clinical team. These 2 staff have completed and are in the process of completing their Master’s Degree in Applied Behavior Analysis. The BCBA Supervisor provides consultative and direct instructional behavioral services to the supervisees. The Supervisees, who make up the Clinical Team of NSMHA, are responsible for conducting assessments as needed, generating behavior support plans, graphing and analyzing behavior data and ensuring the effective implementation of all residential based treatment programs for all clients on their caseload. The role of the BCBA Supervisor is to ensure sufficient supervision of all BCBA candidates with whom they work as per BACB guidelines.

What you’ll do:

  • Supervise interdisciplinary team on all behavioral plans within context of Positive Behavioral Supports.
  • Supervise Clinical Coordinators/ Behavioral Specialist in DDS, ensuring that regular individual supervision takes place and ensuring that the quality of their work upholds the mission of North Suffolk’s commitment to quality for all persons served.
  • Develop and Oversee behavior plans; assess individuals, collect data, and write structured behavior plans in conjunction with other support team members.
  • Provide clinical and administrative supervision on the implementation of behavior plan.

As an Substance Abuse Specialist, you’ll lead the team in working with persons served to understand how substance use and potentially addictive behavior impacts the person’s health. Your goal will be to help the team develop a plan to address the level of use and the impact of substance use and addictive behavior and the persons’ readiness for change.
The Adult Community Clinical Services Program (ACCS) assists more than 450 adults diagnosed with serious and persistent mental illness who have been referred by the Department of Mental Health. This is a clinical program based on the principles of Psychiatric Rehabilitation, person-centered planning, and the belief that recovery is possible. Persons served may live on their own, in group homes or in North Suffolk owned properties. Each person served works with an Integrated Team that includes licensed clinicians, psychiatrists, nurses, addiction specialists, peer specialists and community support specialists.

Expectations of the Role:
• Works collaboratively with Recovery Coaches to provide teaching and modeling to the teams on addressing substance use concerns.
• Provides direct interventions and supports to persons.
• Refers persons to community treatment and support programs.
• Provides, as needed, individual, group, and family counseling and psychoeducational services regarding addictions.
• Is trained in evidence based practices including SBIRT, Motivational Interviewing, Stages of Change model and Harm Reduction.
• May provide functions of LPHA in the Integrated Team if person possesses LADC-1 licensure level.
• Document each person’s progress in the confidential record according to established methods and procedures.
