NSMHA is looking for a Therapeutic Training and Support Worker to help local youth and families. The In-Home Therapy team works together to help a child and family treat the child’s challenging behaviors and mental health needs, and help the family with supporting and caring for the child. The Therapeutic Training & Support Worker helps implement the therapeutic objectives of the treatment plan designed to address a youth’s mental health, behavioral and emotional needs. This might include teaching the youth to understand, direct, interpret, manage, and develop self control of feelings as well as emotional responses to situations. This position also assists the family with addressing the youth’s emotional and mental health needs.

What you’ll do:

  • Support the development of a youth-and family-centered treatment plan.
  • Support the review/development of a risk management/safety plan in collaboration with the youth and caregiver.
  • Provide support, referral and linkage to appropriate services along the continuum of care.
  • Provide phone contact and support to the youth and family as indicated.
  • Work with families to implement focused interventions and behavioral techniques to: enhance problem-solving, limit-setting, risk management/safety planning, communication, build skills to strengthen the family, advance therapeutic goals, or improve ineffective patterns of interaction.
  • Identify and utilize community resources; develop and maintain natural supports for the youth and parent/caregiver(s) in order to promote sustainability of treatment gains.
  • Support families in developing and maintaining natural supports for the youth and parent caregiver(s) in order to promote sustainability of treatment gains.
  • Provide phone and face-to-face coordination with entities that may impact the youth’s treatment plan.
  • Provide coaching to youth and family in support of decision-making in both crisis and non-crisis situation.
  • Provide skills training for youth and parent/caregiver(s).
  • When requested by the family, will also accompany the family to meetings about the youth’s behavioral health treatment needs in schools, day care, foster homes, and other community-based locations.

What you’ll need:

  • Education/experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree in a human service field from an accredited university and one year experience working with children/adolescents/transition age youth; OR
    • Associate’s degree in a human services field from an accredited school and one year of experience working with the target population; OR
    • High school diploma or GED and a minimum of two years of experience working with children/adolescents/transition age youth
  • Skills: You must have a valid Massachusetts Driver’s license, reliable vehicle, and ability to work in community and in-home settings.

As a Peer Coordinator for NSMHA you will work with the ACCS program, providing support and guidance to ACCS teams in order to ensure that the role of Peer Support Specialist is defined and integrated into services.  The Peer Coordinator provides Peer supervision and mentorship to Peer Support Specialists in ACCS. This position reports to the ACCS Director and “ACCS Peer Leadership” and is designated for a person who is or has been a recipient of services for a mental health and/or substance use disorder and identifies as a person in Recovery. Because of his/her life experience with mental illness and mental health services, the Peer Coordinator provides expertise that professional training cannot replicate. The Peer Coordinator may also be a resource to other Departments of the Agency with the goal of helping the entire Agency become more Recovery focused.

Expectation of the Role:

  • Provides Peer supervision and mentorship to Peer Support Specialists in ACCS and represent the agency in various committees, events and recovery focused trainings.
  • Delivers guidance and supervision to Peer Support Specialists within the ACCS program with regard to their role as peer support specialists as directed.
  • Acts as a mentor to other Peer Support Specialists in ACCS and as an educator to other integrated team members who seek to learn the role of a peer support specialist.
  • Participates and makes recommendations in the recruitment, hiring, and evaluation of Peer Support Specialists in ACCS.
  • Meets regularly with ACCS Program Directors and Assistant Program Managers to develop schedules, provide guidance, and assist in the assignments of Peer Support Specialists within designated teams to assure peer support services that uphold the values and ethics of each discipline.
  • Effectively advocates for people with mental health and/or substance use disorders and plays a leadership role in helping others understand the need for people to independently make informed choices regarding their own recovery.
  • Provides leadership in the implementation and use of WRAP or similar recovery oriented self-management plans as well as other Evidenced Based Practices including Stages of Change and Motivational Interviewing.
  • All other duties as assigned by Peer Leadership and the ACCS Director.

What you’’ll need:

Education: High School Diploma/GED required. Bachelor’s Degree preferred (which may be in a field other than behavioral sciences)Certified Peer Specialist Certification preferred.

Experience: Has work experience with adults who identify as having a mental health and/or substance use disorder or with individuals with similar human-services needs. Has three years of supervisory experience, preferably in the human services field. Must be a current or former recipient of mental health services who is in recovery.  May have related training (e.g., certified occupational therapy assistant, home health care aide) or work experience (e.g., teaching) and life experience.

Skills: CPR/First Aid certified within three months of hire (training provided)

Since 1959, North Suffolk Mental Health Association, Inc. has provided community-based mental health services to individuals and families in East Boston, Boston, Chelsea, Revere and Winthrop. To better serve our community, NSMHA has developed a comprehensive and integrated community-based system of engagement, treatment, rehabilitation and support programs to promote the recovery of adults living with serious mental illness, addictions and co-occurring disorders. Adult Community Clinical Services (ACCS) is a comprehensive clinically focused service anchored by a multi-disciplinary team that provides services through an integrated team led by clinical staff.  ACCS will provide clinical interventions and peer and family support to facilitate engagement, support functioning and maximize symptom stabilization and self-management of individuals diagnosed with severe and persistent mental illness.
