This rare career opportunity offered from one of New England’s most respected and progressive mental health services organizations provides the opportunity to work directly with dually diagnosed individuals in a dynamic, community based setting.

The Substance Abuse Specialist (SAS) is supervised by experienced and licensed professionals, and is part of a multi-disciplinary team working with clients struggling with severe mental illness and co-occurring substance abuse with the goal of helping them to realize their goals and move forward in Recovery.

The SAS provides case management and care coordination involving collaterals from area hospitals, the Department of Mental Health, court clinics, substance abuse treatment programs, (short term and long term addictions treatment programs), housing agencies, and other North Suffolk programs which will take the SAS into court room settings, psychiatric hospital settings, occasionally prison/jail settings, and other community based settings on an “as needed” basis.

The SAS uses a person-centered, strengths-based approach employing robust, evidence-based practices to uncover motivation while working with the client to cultivate positive growth. Meeting individually with clients and employing techniques such as motivational interviewing, the SAS works collaboratively with the client to assess needs and hopes while designing and implementing a highly personalized treatment plan to realize change. This position requires excellent verbal communication, writing, and organization skills and the ability to work independently in the community.

Extensive training is provided and ongoing training is available and encouraged.

This is a specialized position and the SAS, in addition to regular duties, will provide consultation and training to other team members, clients and agency personnel.

Job Requirements:

While a Bachelor’s Degree is highly preferred, at a minimum, a High School Diploma/GED equivalent is required

Must have at least (2) years experience working with people with severe and persistent mental illness

Must also have at least two years experience with substance abuse recovery/treatment

Must Valid driver’s license

Must have MAP Certification through DPH, CPR/1st Aide within three months of hire (all training/certification provided).
